  • Dissapearance of a financially golden newspaper period – In short, newspapers weren't terribly profitable until the last quarter of the 20th century.

    I'm not sure if the argument that owners will retain them for social influence will fly in today's competitive landscape — we don't make much profit but we can influence society… meh.

    There are so many varied ways to influence society today, many of which cost less and can make more money.
