Sanctioned vigilantism?

Great idea, not!

How about the next two times my students answers a question wrong, I warn them. And then the next time, I’ll shoot them for not knowing.

Or after warning a restaurant two times about not getting my order right, I trash the place and set it on fire.

This is one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard of.

We have a system, last time I checked, for dealing with criminal behavior in this country, it’s called the courts.

Grrrrr!

Yes, I’m still alive

Though you might not think so, given the dearth of posts.

However, I’ve revamped the design of my print and Web portfolio pages.

It’s still CSS, but now the text does not wrap underneath the thumbnails, the thumbnails have increased in size, and I’ve added more clips to both sections. I also created a neat-o-keen PHP script that creates a page on the fly for all of my print clips. I never liked linking directly to images, but didn’t want to have an XHTML page for each clip.

Did I mention I’m looking for a job?

I’m going to be updating my resume soon and I’ll try to keep a running log of how the job hunt goes, for those that are interested.

And I promise to start commenting on Web design, journalism, etc. soon.

I’m currently working on my thesis and teaching J310, advanced editing and design, at MU, and between those two tasks and the run-up to my job hunt, I’ve been a bit busy.

Site updates

I recently added my Sept. 11, 2002 special section to the print design section of my Web site.

I apologize of the paucity of entries lately. It’s finals week here at MU and I’m also trying to get the ball rolling on my thesis, I’ve gotten almost all the texts for my content analysis and sent out the first batch of letters asking circulation managers for some data.

Look for some of my more current design work to be posted soon as I begin to gear up for the great job hunt — I finish my thesis in August if anyone’s interested in a copy editor or designer (print and Web).

RSS change

Not to be considered a hypocrite, I’ve changed my RSS feed to only show an excerpt and link back to the full article, ala Zeldman.

The design is the message

Zeldman, in the course of several days has gone from saying, rightfully, that the design is an inherent part of content and that’s why he didn’t have an RSS feed, to creating his own hand-rolled feed.

He apparently got some nasty comments, and has said that design is still a form of content and that his feed is merely the moral equivalent of an opt-in e-mail system. I take the same view of my RSS feed. It is merely another method to attract readers to my site and let them know of updates.

I applaud Mr. Zeldman for taking the, often unpopular, stance that design is a part of content. There are a lot of Web “designers” out there who either a.) never learned about content-driven design or b.) learned about it and don’t care.

I am an unabashed supporter of content-driven design: design isn’t just about looks. Design is about solving problems, helping readers (viewers, listeners, etc.) find what they want and telling stories. Put simply, we are here to communicate, the words that are written, the photos that are shot and edited, and the pages put together should all serve to send a message: preferably one unified message.

Many “designers” on the Web today are just stylists who can make things look “cool.”

I’ll take communication over cool any day…
